The setting of the novel plays a very big part in the story. The book is set in a rural part of Queensland in the outback.
It's set around a small town called Wirawee. What mostly surrounds the town is vast acres of farm land.Most of the
characters in the novel live and work on farms so they are used to being with nature when they go down to Hell. The start of the novel is set just before 'the show'. (an annual carnival held in the small town of Wirawee) The seven of them decide to leave just before the weekend of the show and this proves to be a very lucky decision. The show grounds become a very important site in the novel because that is where the enemy force holds everyone's family captive.

Hell is a place just out over Tailors Stitch and down Satan's Steps.It is truly a very rugged area and very inaccessible, when looking out over the hollow, all that can be seen is a sea of green tree tops. And anyone hiding there would remain hidden. This is why it holds as a good refuge for the seven.
